Whispers Of Comfort: A Kitchen Sanctuary In Art and Function

Leah Fernandes

Presenting a life sized kitchen installation using a combination of textile and ceramic mediums, Leah explores ideas of functional art and design and how this can evoke a sense of tranquility in the home. With the majority of her display made from scratch, she explores her commitment and love for crafting, further enriching this installation with her personal touch. Deep diving into the connection between handmade craft and interior design, Leah uses a combination of throwing, slip casting, handbuilding, sewing, batik, weaving, and paper making to emphasize the role of art in the everyday. With influence from her Portuguese heritage and the organic and whimsical forms found in nature, Leah's work exhibits a connection between her love for nature and exploration of her Portuguese background. The Portuguese influence is shown throughout her ceramic tiling within the chosen colours and designs while the organic and natural themes are evident throughout the installation as a whole. Each item exists here to enhance both function and aesthetic, coming together to create a rich display of character and function. Exploring her craftsmanship and personal taste, Leah continues to transform daily domestic objects into functional artworks that are not only visibly engaging but useful in daily life. Through this inviting installation, Leah urges viewers to reconsider the possibilities of art in the home, showcasing the ways in which creativity and craftsmanship can enrich both the home and the everyday experience.
